Shining a light on mental health with community events during Mental Health Week

4th October 2024

In recognition of Mental Health Week (5 – 13 October) North West Hospital and Health Service (HHS) is gearing up for an exciting week of events that promises to bring colour, community, and connection.

The activities will kick off with a family-friendly colour run event held at Kruttschnitt Oval on Friday 4 October at 5:30pm, led by the Tackling Regional Adversity through Connected Communities (TRACC) team.

North West HHS Mental Health Clinician for TRACC, Ms Denise Price, said it is an exciting family event not to be missed.

“We encourage everyone to come along, have fun, and remember that they are not alone in their mental health journey,” said Ms Price.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health and events like the colour run remind us of the power of community and connection.”

Free snow cones will be available as well as activities for the kids, music, and plenty of community spirit. Registration is required for all attendees through Eventbrite.

A community barbeque will also be held Wednesday 9 October at the Mount Isa Hospital Healing Tree.

This year’s theme is “Connect for Mental Health” emphasising the proactive steps people can take to nurture and support positive mental health and wellbeing for themselves and their communities.

The North West HHS Mental Health, Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs team will be leading the event from 12:00pm and are encouraging members of the community to come along for food and a chat.

On Thursday 10 October North West HHS clinicians will have a booth at the Mental Health and Wellbeing Symposium, hosted by the North West Queensland Mental Health Network, to engage community members.

The symposium will be at the Mount Isa Civic Centre from 9:30am to 4:00pm and is open to the community.
