North West Hospital and Health Service encourages the community to get vaccinated and protect their loved ones from respiratory illnesses.
As the event season picks up, residents are attending work and school then appearing at community events alongside tourists who may be carrying respiratory pathogens, unknowingly spreading illnesses to vulnerable people in the community.
Executive Director of Medical Services, Anthony Bell, speaks to the importance of getting vaccinated to manage infections.
“It is important for parents to get their family vaccinated to protect themselves from Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs). These ARIs can cause severe infection in some people including babies 12 months and younger; especially if born premature, people with heart and lung disease, older adults, or anyone with a weak immune system (immunocompromised).” Says Dr Bell.
Infection, Prevention and Control Nurse, Lea Scheltens says during the winter months we see an increase in ARIs, some common ARIs include COVID-19, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Influenza A and Influenza B.
“It is a timely reminder to get the flu vaccine in preparation for the winter months, the best way to avoid getting sick is to talk to your local pharmacy or health clinic about receiving an Influenza, COVID-19, RSV, or whooping cough vaccination.” Ms Scheltens stated.
Influenza, RSV, and whooping cough are all highly contagious infections that can affect the upper airways and lungs.
In addition to getting vaccinated, there are other steps to fighting acute respiratory illnesses including washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and staying home if feeling unwell.
