COVID-19 vaccine now available at Mount Isa Hospital to all residents over 50’s
Starting this week, thousands more North West residents can get vaccinated at the Mount Isa Hospital Vaccination Clinic and other service providers.
The Department of Health made the announcement that from May 3, anyone over the age of 50 are now eligible to register for protection against COVID-19.
North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS) A/CE Dr Karen Murphy said she was pleased that the hospital’s vaccine clinic was now able to extend their services to the wider public.
“We’ve been successfully vaccinating people in tiers 1a and 1b, and to now add the over 50’s cohort is a great step forward for the North West as we move towards greater protection from COVID-19,” Dr Murphy said.
“Anyone 50 years and over is eligible to book in and receive the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination from our hospital vaccination clinic.”
The eligibility criteria has expanded to anyone aged 50 and over following the rollout of the National Cabinet's updated vaccination clinic.
AstraZeneca remains the recommended vaccine for those aged 50 and over with Pfizer for those aged under 50.
Dr Murphy said all 11 NWHHS outreach clinics would soon be equipped to offer the vaccine also, with a planned outreach vaccination schedule due to begin from May 31 following the arrival of the Pfizer vaccine.
“We are very much looking forward to rolling out our vaccine clinics through the North West. We have some very vulnerable communities within our region, and it is essential that vaccine uptake is high so we can continue to protect ourselves,” Dr Murphy said.
“COVID-19 won’t go away anytime soon, but we can all help to ensure the safety and health of our state and nation over the coming months.”
Bookings can be made for the Vaccination Clinic by phoning 1800 551 552.
