Today on International Day of the Midwife, North West Hospital and Health Service (HHS) celebrates and recognises the exceptional midwives working across the North West region.

Executive Director Nursing, Midwifery and Clinical Governance Michelle Garner said the work, professionalism and care displayed by midwives on a daily basis deserves to be recognised.

“Our midwives play an important role in caring for our communities every single day. While COVID-19 has seen the cancellation of many events over the last two years, one significant life event that can’t be put on hold is the birth of a new baby,” she said.

“The midwives we have in the North West are some of the most dedicated, committed and caring people we have and the support they provide to new mums as they navigate pregnancy and motherhood is second to none.”

North West HHS Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) Manager Suzanne Weir said the MGP program had been embraced by the local community and enhanced the quality of care provided in the region.

“The MGP is a program where a woman is supported by the same midwife and a small group of assisting midwives throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and afterwards at home for up to six weeks,” she said.

“With Mount Isa having one of the highest birth rates in the State, our priority is to ensure our mums feel safe, connected and supported throughout their journey. MGP midwives work closely with obstetricians and other healthcare providers to ensure that the woman receives care tailored to her needs.”

More than 528 births have been supported through the MGP program in Mount Isa since launching in May 2019.
