North West Hospital and Health Service seeks local First Nations artist for design work.

North West Hospital and Health Service (North West HHS) is on the lookout for a talented First Nations artist interested in a freelance design opportunity.

If chosen, the successful artist will receive $2000 upon submission of the artwork.

Four years ago, the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) and outreach service was established to provide essential support to expecting mothers.

To foster an inclusive environment for First Nations women and families, MGP aims to incorporate culturally significant artwork into their services.

The team is calling upon First Nations artists from across the North West region to express their interest in creating an artwork to serve as a logo for the MGP and outreach midwives’ uniform.

This logo will also feature on various platforms including banners, stationary, and merchandise.

Executive Director of First Nations Health, Christine Mann, emphasises the importance of making maternity services welcoming to First Nations families.

“The MGP and outreach services are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of First Nations mothers and families in the North West, given that they comprise at least 50 percent of the families under our care,” Ms Mann says.

“- We are committed to supporting the families we work with to be strong, healthy and well, and this means making sure they feel comfortable and relaxed when they first come to see us by being surrounded by culturally appropriate art in our clinics. Through art, we also aim to enlighten and inspire others, including our staff who support women and families, to foster a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture.”

By engaging local artists, North West HHS aims to authentically reflect the unique culture of the North West region and strengthen support and belonging for First Nations families in healthcare.

To submit an expression of interest, please send an artist biography, portfolio of three relevant works, and a commitment to complete the chosen artwork by Wednesday 17^th July 2024, to MGP manager Suzanne Weir Suzanne.Weir@health.qld.gov.au by Wednesday 5^th of June.
