New Chief Executive Officer for the North West Hospital and Health Service

26th October 2021

The North West Hospital and Health Service [NWHHS] is delighted to announce Craig
Carey as its new Chief Executive [CE].
Mr Carey joins us from Central West HHS and commences in the role of Chief
Executive NWHHS from November 8, 2021. Mr Carey has previously undertaken the
role of A/CE in both Central West and South West HHS and is currently the General
Manager Acute Health Services Central West HHS.
NWHHS Administrator Michael Walsh said Mr Carey has significant public health and
chronic disease experience, gained while working with the Queensland Health Chief
Health Officer. He has also worked as a Director in the Healthcare Purchasing and
System Performance Division in the Department of Health.
“Mr Carey has qualifications in Psychology, Health Management and Policy Analysis
and recently completed the AICD Director’s course and has a deep understanding of
the Queensland Health service delivery and funding arrangements,” Mr Walsh said.
“I look forward to working with Craig to continue to deliver high quality and safe
services for the people of the North West, and as we prepare for the transition to a
Board from April 2022.”
Mr Walsh extends his gratitude to outgoing acting Chief Executive Dr Karen Murphy
who has acted in the role since early 2020.
“Dr Murphy has undertaken the role during very challenging times as we have been
dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and she will be taking a short break before she
embarks on the next phase of her career working in the Cairns and Hinterland HHS.
“I wish Dr Murphy all the best and reiterate my thanks on behalf of the NWHHS for her
tireless work.”
