Camooweal Primary Health Care Centre officially opened
North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS) is thrilled to announce the official opening of the newly built Camooweal Primary Health Care Centre, a milestone celebrated on Tuesday, 26 November 2024, with a well-attended community event.
The opening brought together local residents, Elders, Traditional Owner groups, students, North West healthcare providers, Queensland Police Service (QPS), Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), Mount Isa City Council, NWHHS staff, and Board members. Welcome to Country was delivered by Camooweal community members Thomas Macnamara and Anthony Saltmere.
NWHHS Chief Executive Sean Birgan officially opened the event and highlighted the importance of collaboration in bringing the project to life.
“This health clinic reflects the collective voice of Camooweal,” Mr. Birgan said.
“We engaged in nearly two years of consultation with the community to ensure that every detail — from shade to car parking — met the community’s needs. This clinic isn’t just a building; it’s a space designed for the people it serves, supporting health and well-being now and into the future.
“This new clinic represents more than just an investment in bricks and mortar. It’s an investment in people — in their health, their future, and their quality of life. It provides an environment that attracts and retains healthcare professionals, enabling us to deliver exceptional care where it’s needed most.”
The celebration included performances by students from Camooweal State School, who delighted attendees with their songs, and a time capsule ceremony where guests contributed messages and mementos to be opened in 2074, ensuring this historic moment will be remembered for generations.
Board Director Marco Giuseppin ceremonially cut the ribbon, marking the official opening of the clinic.
“I remember visiting Camooweal during the height of the COVID pandemic and seeing the urgent need for an upgrade,” he said.
“This facility is not just a building; it’s a promise to deliver the best healthcare services to Camooweal and its surrounding areas.”
The clinic rebuild, which broke ground in May 2024, was delivered by Hutchinson Builders as part of Queensland’s $1 billion Building Rural and Remote Health Program. The new facility boasts upgraded emergency care rooms, versatile consultation spaces, enhanced staff amenities, and sustainable features such as solar panels, modern water tanks, and a generator.
Guests enjoyed guided tours of the state-of-the-art facility, a community lunch, and special giveaways to commemorate the occasion.
The Camooweal Primary Health Care Centre is set to be a vital hub for health and well-being in the region, ensuring access to high-quality care close to home for years to come.
